On English Translation of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Terms from the Perspective of Typological Terminology

Chinese intangible cultural heritage (ICH) terms are in great number and of great variety. Each type of the ICH terms has its own characteristics. To classify these terms and analyze their characteristics are the precondition for translating ICH terms. The previous translation practices of ICH terms lack consideration in conceptual system, standardization and acceptability of the translated terms. To address these problems, translators should classify these terms based on the concepts. In the conceptual system, translators can locate the term, clarify the conceptual connotation of the term and choose a reasonable translated term. Such English translation strategies will be of benefit to improving the quality of English translation of the ICH terms and promoting cross-linguistic dissemination and discourse construction of Chinese ICH knowledge.
