On Space in David Henry Hwang's Drama

  • As one of the most influential dramatists in the modern era, David Henry Hwang expands the scope of Chinese American Literature and brings vigor into the American drama. His drama creation goes through three stages:alienation, nationalism, cosmopolitanism. In the three stages, he breaks the boundary of traditional drama, making its previous single space a multi-tiered one. The endeavor redefines characters and expresses his wish to guard the native land and make different spaces coexist. The move not only enhances the importance of space but also transcends the traditional theatrical space.
