Abstract
Based on Relevance Theory, this paper aims to analyze the discourse marker “well” in Goin'a Buffalo—A Tragifantasy from a Cognitive-Pragmatic perspective. With the help of corpus analysis tool WordSmith 7.0, this study adopts quantitative methods to explore its six pragmatic functions under different situations. Specifically, it serves the role of thinking delay markers, information shortage markers, information correction markers, coherence markers, moderating markers and turn-taking markers. It contributes to revealing the dynamic nature of natural language communication by incorporating discourse marker “well” into microcosmic research and analyzing it in specific contents of the drama under Relevance Theory.
