On Postmodernist Narrative Strategies of The Sense of an Ending

  • The Sense of an Ending by the contemporary British writer, Julian Barnes, is a story with the theme of memory, truth and responsibility, which manifests itself with the typical characteristics of postmodernism through the application of fragmentation, intertextuality and metaphor. The fragmented narrative way conforms to the protagonist's memory modes and psychological needs; The intertextuality in the text helps to reveal the characters and promote the development of the plot; The metaphorical approach reveals the profound implication of the theme of the novel. By presenting the rational self-questioning of the British middle class represented by the protagonist, the author reflects and evaluates the current situation of British society and advocates people's sense of moral responsibility.
