A Survey of the English Autonomous Learning Abilities of Elite Program Freshmen

Abstract
Autonomous learning abilities have an important impact on English learning. A survey of the English autonomous learning abilities conducted on 332 Elite Program freshmen in Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University indicated that (1) their overall autonomous learning abilities and autonomous learning concepts were on the high level, while their autonomous learning behaviors on the medium level. Among the three dimensions of overall learning abilities, the two dimensions of learning goal making and learning process monitoring and evaluation were on the high level, while the dimension of learning methods using on the medium level. (2) Their overall autonomous learning abilities including autonomous learning concepts, learning behaviors and the three dimensions all significantly and positively correlated with English grades. (3) Significant differences existed between high and low achievers on overall autonomous learning abilities, including learning concepts and behaviors and the three dimensions.
