Insights from Confucianism on the Cultivation of Moral Character in University Students

  • Moral character stands as a core element within the overall structure of individual qualities. The current developmental status of moral character among university students is, on the whole, positive; however, challenges such as the ambiguity in moral cognition, emotional indifference towards morality, fragility of moral willpower, and utilitarian tendencies in moral behavior persist. Confucianism, with its emphasis on “knowledge”, cultivation of “emotions”, steadfastness of “will” and implementation of “actions”, provides a rich source of inspiration for the cultivation of moral character. Practical construction in this regard necessitates implementation through classroom teaching, campus culture, and social practices.
