葛译《生死疲劳》中动物熟语翻译研究

A Study on Howard Goldblatt’s Translation of Animal-related Idioms in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out

  • 摘要: 《生死疲劳》中有大量与动物相关的熟语,语言风格生动独特。经统计、分析发现:葛浩文在翻译《生死疲劳》中的谚语、歇后语、惯用语等熟语时,直译比例均超过了65%。在翻译成语、俚语时,直译比例不足50%。翻译方法上,直译用得最多,其次是意译等。整体上,葛浩文倾向于把汉语中更多的文化异质成分保留,传递到英译文之中。

     

    Abstract: There are a great number of animal-related idioms in Life And Death Are Wearing Me Out, showcasing Mo Yan’s unique writing style of vividness. Statistics and analysis reveal that when Howard Goldblatt translates proverbs, folk wisecracks, and idiomatic expressions, he utilizes a high proportion of literal translations of over 65%. The proportion of literal translation use in translating four-character idiomatic phrases and slang words is less than 50%. In terms of translation methods, the literal translation method is the most used method, followed by the free translation, etc. On the whole, Howard Goldblatt tends to retain and convey more of the cultural exoticism in Chinese to the English translation.
