The Imagination of Cultural Community in Post-Racial Writing:A Discussion on Ted Chiang's Science Fiction Novels

Abstract: Against the backdrop of globalization, Chinese-American literature has broken away from conventional ethnic-narrative frameworks and embarked on diversified development. As a new-generation Chinese-American science-fiction writer, Ted Chiang abandons traditional themes centering on immigrant experiences and cultural conflicts. By drawing on sci-fi elements to construct speculative fictional worlds, he delivers philosophical reflections concerning humanity’s overall existential conditions. His writings presents the characteristics of post-racial writing. On one hand, he downplays characters’ ethnic identities to dismantle the binary opposition between the self and the others. On the other hand, through cognitive revolution, emotional bonds and explorations into existential meaning, he shapes the vision of a culturally pluralistic community characterized by harmony without uniformity. This paper explores how Ted Chiang deconstructs racial boundaries, reconstructs the logic of cultural co-existence and reveals universal human dilemmas via technological allegories, thereby offering a new paradigm for contemporary cross-cultural communication.
