On Space in David Henry Hwang's Drama

  • 摘要: 美国著名华裔戏剧家黄哲伦(David Henry Hwang)从时间维度上探讨过去生活经历对现在身份的构建,强调空间与结构的重要性,他的创作经历了同化、民族主义、泛世界主义三个阶段。在这三个阶段中,黄哲伦巧妙利用空间的多元表达和转换,实现了戏剧中几个不同空间的共存与延宕。这一舞台实践提升了空间对戏剧的重要性,实现了对传统戏剧空间的超越。

     

    Abstract: As one of the most influential dramatists in the modern era, David Henry Hwang expands the scope of Chinese American Literature and brings vigor into the American drama. His drama creation goes through three stages:alienation, nationalism, cosmopolitanism. In the three stages, he breaks the boundary of traditional drama, making its previous single space a multi-tiered one. The endeavor redefines characters and expresses his wish to guard the native land and make different spaces coexist. The move not only enhances the importance of space but also transcends the traditional theatrical space.
